This is last of the InFocus recession series. A recession is past due, and although one is not expected in 2016, it is highly probable that we could experience one in 2017. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects advanced economies, including the United States (U.S.), to grow 2.2% in 2017, but only if energy prices do not tank and the recent strength in the U.S. dollar fades. Global and U.S. growth has been 2% per year below mean annualized rates of growth since 1919.

On October 11, 2016, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (ML) noted that the S&P 500 Index’s median forward price to earnings ratio (P/E, 17.7 on a forward basis versus a long-term average of 14.6) was at its highest levels since 2001.
